The collection includes sculptures, statues, coins and inscriptions found in the excavations of the island’s ancient capital, what is now Palaiopolis. It was an important Ionic town with 12 centuries of life (6th b.C. – 6th a.C.). The most significant exhibits are the marble lion, the marble statuette of Artemis and a marble slate with the only complete hymn to goddess Isis in Greece. Cycladian Museum of Olive (Olive Press of Helmis) The oil press is in the ground floor of a two-storey, stone building, which is, according to sources, more than 150 years old. The structure is a typical example of a pre-industrial, animal-powered unit for extracting olive oil. The last owner has donated the building, along with its equipment, to the Development Company of Andros Inc. for its renovation and conversion into a museum. The Museum displays the olive oil production process in the traditional rural communities of Andros and also provides valuable information about this valuable product.
Location / Access It is located in village Pitrofos, which is over the road from Gavrio to Hora, near Stavropeda.
Days / Hours of Operation The institutions that have contributed to the renovation and development of the building no longer support its operation. Today’s owner, D. Helmis, can be contacted to guide visitors around the place and demonstrate the operation of the oil press.
